Our History

The EROM-NMSM is an established school of Midwifery by the Butuan Puericulture Center No. 394, Inc., on August 28, 1958. The first of its kind in the city of Butuan and the province of Agusan, the first in Mindanao.

The school is licensed to operate under the auspices and direct supervision of the Bureau of Health and Medical Services and does not fall under the jurisdiction of the Bureau of Private Schools.

Midwifery was then a 1 year and 6 months course, later it was made into 2-year course to prepare the student midwives to become competent and globally competitive and can offer services for mother and child at an utmost care while updating their care in the changing time of society.

This institution had been turning out graduates who made good in the Board Examination for midwives held in Manila. It was also lucky to be given slots from MOH-UNICEF Scholars from 1975 to 1981, and to which these awardees came from the cultural minority group and are now serving their home town in the rural areas.

It was in the 36th batch of graduates composed of 71 students who took the board examinations wherein 17 of which made it to the top ten all over the country. It was one hundred percent result.

On July 31, 1986, the name of the school was changed to Elisa R. Ochoa Memorial Northern Mindanao School of Midwifery, Inc., in honor of its founder, Mrs. Elisa Rosales Ochoa, who was also the first Principal of the school.

On September 14, 2002, the school was granted the authority to offer program in CAREGIVING NC II (786 Hours) pursuant to Republic Act No. 7796 Creating the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) and in accordance with TESDA Board Resolution 98-03 dated January 23, 1998.

Through all these years, EROM-NMSM has maintained the prescribed standards of instruction and complied with the rules and regulations of Commission on Higher Education (CHED). Thus, on May 4, 2009, it was granted a permit to operate the 2 years Bachelor of Science in Midwifery course (BSM), the first in the Philippines. On March 29, 2011, the first 12 graduates were conferred with the title BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN MIDWIFERY. Mrs. Ruth A. Castro, the President of APSOM (Association of Philippine Schools of Midwifery) highlighted the occasion with her presence as the Guest Speaker.
